Configuration Form / Group Setup / Settings
This tabsheet is used to setup general settings for a newsgroup (or for the "DEFAULT" newsgroup, which will be used as the initial settings for any new newsgroups you subscribe to later on).
The sheet has the following configuration options:
Use Default Settings
If this is checked, BNR automatically copies the settings from the "DEFAULT" newsgroup to this newsgroup. That is, if you change some setting in the "DEFAULT" newsgroup, all your subscribed groups that have this box checked will use the new settings you just changed. If this checkbox is checked for the "DEFAULT" newsgroup (where it is called "Use default settings for new subscribed groups"), all the newsgroups you subscribe to later on will automatically have this box checked.
Note that you cannot change any other settings for a newsgroup that has this checkbox checked.
To change the settings for the "DEFAULT" newsgroup, select the "Newsgroups" root item on the treeview, and then select the "Group setup" tabsheet.
Connect-On-Demand
If you check this box, BNR will attempt to connect on each available news server that carries this newsgroup when you first open this newsgroup. Also, if you mark articles for download and the server where the article exists is not connected to, BNR attempts to reconnect to the server. This setting is recommended.
If you uncheck the box, you will have to manually connect to the news server(s) (by selecting the server on the treeview and clicking on the "Connect" button) before (or after) opening this newsgroup.
Automatically mark all parts of multi-part binaries
If you check this box, BNR automatically marks all parts of a multipart binary file when you click on any of the arts. If you uncheck the box, BNR will ask whether you wish to download all the parts or only the parts you marked for download. It is recommended that you check this box, especially for newsgroups that often contain large binaries.
Show "From" column
BNR attempts to minimize the amount of message header data to download for the article list, and the article sender ("From") headers are optional. On slow connections you can save some time by not downloading the article sender headers.
Show "Date" column
Like the "From" headers, the original article creation date is optional. BNR uses the ordinal number of the article on the server to optimize the article download (the lowest-numbered article marked for download is downloaded first, to minimize the chance of some of the marked articles to expire while the download is in progress). If you wish to see exactly when the articles have been posted, you can select to download the date headers.
Show "Part" column
If you check this box, BNR will show a separate part column in the article list. This is useful in newsgroups that contain very large files (for example, MP3 newsgroups). NOTE! You need to check this box if you wish to show multi-part articles on a single row!
Refresh headers by server (instead of when all done)
The default behaviour of BNR is to keep the article list greyed-out until all new headers have been received from all the servers. This is done so that you know you see all the existing new headers when the article list is ungreyed. However, if you have several servers and one of them is very slow, this will cause a long delay before you can start marking articles for download. If you turn on this setting, the article list is ungreyed as soon as the new articles headers have been received from the first server, and the headers from the other servers are later added as they are received.
Disable automatic FileCheck after new headers
The default behaviour of BNR is to run FileCheck automatically after new headers have been received. However, if your file check takes a long time and especially if you have enabled the "refresh headers by server" setting, this might take a considerable amount of time. With this setting you can disable the automatic file checking, and only run the FileCheck using the Articles Menu when needed.
All of these settings are saved automatically and immediately after you have made the change. However, if you have made changes to the column settings you need to close the newsgroup and reopen it for BNR to download (or hide) those columns.
