Configuration Form / Group Setup / File Checking

On this tabsheet you can configure the file checking options. See also the CSV page for settings that affect file checking.

Check for existing files

If you check this checkbox, BNR will scan your decoding directory automatically after downloading the article headers and mark in the article list all files that already exist in that directory. You can also re-run the FileCheck whenever you wish. If you turn off this checkbox, no file checking will be performed.

Include subfolders

If you turn on this setting, subfolders of the decoding directory and any extra directories will be scanned as well.

Check in additional directories

Here you can add extra directories to be scanned for existing files. Click on the Add button to add new directories to be scanned. You can also remove directories from the list by selecting the directory and clicking on Remove.

Use a database to check for files on removable disks

If you have removable disks (for example CD-R disks or ZIP disks) that contain files that might turn up again in the newsgroup, it is a good idea to let BNR keep a database of those disks and scan that database for existing files as well. You can give a name for the database so that you can have different databases for MP3 files and JPEG files, for example.

Edit Database

When you click on Edit Database you can edit the contents of your database, for example add new disks into it. The database editor window looks like the following:

RemDrvDB.Gif

In this window you can see the name of the database at the top, and all the volume labels of the disks that you have added to the database. When you open the treeview item on a volume label, you can view the directory contents of the disk.

Add drive contents to database

When you click on this button BNR will scan the selected removable drive contents and add them to the database. You can also add contents of a fixed drive, though this is usually not very useful.

Delete this drive from database

By clicking on this button you can delete the contents of the selected disk from the database.

Close

Clicking on this button will get you back to the configuration tabsheet.

Advanced FileCheck settings

With these settings you can fine-tune the file checking behaviour. If you turn none of these extra options on, BNR will only display matches for posted files that have the same name and whose size is exactly (or estimated to be very nearly, if the article subject does not include file size information) the same as the existing file.

Show name-only matches

When you turn on this setting, BNR will display matching files even when the size differs so much that this is probably not the same file.

max size difference %

This is an additional option for the name-only matching, this setting allows you to select the limit how much the size can differ for the name-only match to be shown. For example if the setting is 10%, a file that is 100KB will still match a file that is 90KB, but not a file that is 89KB in size.

Show size-only matches

With this setting on BNR will show a matching file that has the exact same size but whose name differs. This might be useful to detect files that have been posted before with different names.

Use a directory in a CSV file as a download subdirectory

With this setting on BNR will automatically scan all CSV files found during the FileCheck, and if a match is found the directory column in the CSV file is used as a download subdirectory for this article (if the article did not already have a download directory specified). This way you can easily get your downloaded collections into separate directories automatically. This same handling is done also for Wanted CSV files.
