Article List

This Article List window is where most of the action in BNR takes place. An example of what this window might look like is below:

You can configure the appearance of this Article List window to look a lot different to this example, but the basic layout is the same. The window consists of title bar, column headings, list of articles, and a status bar. Each of these sections is described below.

Title Bar

The title bar shows the name of the newsgroup (in this example, alt.binaries.movies.divx) and the current view mode (in the example, "New"). There are also the standard Windows buttons, to minimize, maximize and close this window.

Column Headings

Below the title bar are the column headings. The heading that is shown in bold type shows the current sort order of the article list. You can sort the articles by different columns either by clicking on the column headings or by selecting the sort order in the View Menu. You can also change the order of the columns by dragging the columns in the order you wish them to be. Note that you cannot sort the first column (which shows the marked article's download priority) nor the columns that show the availability of this article on each of the servers.

List of articles

This is simply the list of all the articles in this newsgroup. Which articles and how many articles are shown depend on various configuration settings in the View Menu. To work with the list of articles you can use the right-click menu or various hotkeys. You can also doubleclick on an article subject to mark/unmark it, and doubleclick on a filename to execute the file (if it exists).

Status Bar

On the bottom of the article list is the status bar. It has five panels showing the following information:

• Number of articles (number of files) and the number of kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes marked for download. In the example above, no articles have been selected fro download, so this shows "0 0KB".
• Number of articles (number of files) and the number of kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes currently selected. In the example, one row has been selected, consisting of 15 parts totalling 9.54 megabytes.
• Number of new articles / total number of articles in this newsgroup. This number contains also the articles that have been expired since the last time you saved the articles in cache, so the number may be bigger than the number of articles actually available.
• Number of rows in the article list grid. If you have selected to collapse multi-part articles into a single row (as in the example above) this number is much less than the actual number of articles.
• Reference counts. These numbers shows how many windows and separate worker threads are using this article window. For example, when you run FileCheck (which is run in a separate thread) the second number increases by one for the duration of the file check. It is not recommended to close the article list window (or BNR) if the second number is not zero.
• Status information. This panel shows textual information about what BNR is doing with this article list at the moment.

You can resize and position the article list window the way you like, and BNR will remember this position and size and use them the next time you open this newsgroup.
